When The Dream Isn't The Reality

When the Dream Isn't the Reality:

From the time parents find out they are expecting they begin to have certain thoughts and feelings about their child and who that child might grow into. Unfortunately it's all too easy to create certain expectations for children, without thinking about them as a unique person. I dreamed of dressing my little girl in pink and ribbons and watching her dance recitals. But, my daughter is actually nothing like what I expected; she's a tomboy who loves playing outside and climbing trees, and doesn't care about wearing pink or hair bows. At first, I was disappointed by this realization, but I love my daughter and want her to become whoever it is she wants to be. The disappointment I felt is common among parents and it is important to mourn this loss of who we thought our children would become so that we can celebrate who our children really are....to read more go to the Tutor Doctor's blog at http://tutordoctorstl.com/blog/?p=84

Punishment vs. Consequences

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

What comes to mind when you hear the following two statements?

Consequences should enhance character and increase your child’s options. Punishment erodes self-esteem and limits your child’s character.

When I think about these two statements, it appears to me that punishment is more of a shame based approach. It’s designed to make your child feel so bad that he or she will not repeat the inappropriate behavior. However, consequences provide an opportunity for redirection. Redirection is designed to help children see all his or her options and the outcomes of his or her actions. Redirection allows parents an opportunity to re-teach their expectations to ensure that their child fully understands what is expected of them. I would love to hear your thoughts on consequences versus punishment. What has been your experience?
