Love Languages

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Communicating with children can often be difficult.  You may find yourself second guessing your parenting approaches when it comes to communicating with your child.  It comes as no surprise that we must communicate with our children to foster the parent/child relationship.  Sara Hoffstot and Suzanne Rodgers will be hosting Spring-A-Licious, a seminar dedicated to understanding your child's love language and the important of parent/child communication.

According to Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, every individual gives and receives emotional love in different ways.  Individuals communicate love through five distinct love languages: physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, and gifts and acts of service.  Your child is no exception to this rule.  There is a special love relationship that is formed between parent and child and this relationship is continuously changing as our children go through their developmental stages.  As a parent, it is important to ask yourself, "What motivates my child?," and "What makes them feel loved?"

Taking the time to spend "quality time" with your child is an important aspect of communication.  Children will feel reluctant to speak with you about what is going on in their life if the lines of communication are closed off.  All children are not the same, so what may work with one parent, may not work for another.  Pay attention to your child's behavior when you are speaking with them, their behavior may be the best predictor whether or not the conversation is headed south.

For more information on learning your child's love language, sign up for Spring-A-Licious, the seminar will focus on spending quality time with your children, cooking spring time treats, and eating delicious food.  Children will be making a stepping stone and a treat to take home.  The seminar is on April 19, 2010 from 6:30-8 p.m.  For more information, please contact Sara Hoffstot at 618-741-8543, or Suzanne Rodgers at 314-369-4498.  Sign up now, limited space available!
